Community Engagement Coordinator, Jobs-Plus Astoria

Reporting to the Assistant Director, the Community Engagement Coordinator is a key member of the Urban Upbound and Jobs-Plus team to ensure the program is on track to meet and exceed all stated outcomes including recruitment, training, job placement (17/month team-wide), income supports, and retention milestones.

Responsibilities:

  • Designing and implementing an aggressive marketing and outreach strategy that engages residents through door-to-door canvassing, tabling, lobby sessions, email blasts, mailings, community events, festivals, social media, and other opportunities;
  • Recruiting, training, and supervising a cadet of Community Ambassadors, residents of public housing who assist in executing the program’s overall outreach strategy;
  • Representing the program at Residents’ Association meetings, community events, and community partner meetings;
  • Collecting, analyzing, and using data to manage outreach efforts and demonstrate results;
  • Assisting program leadership in building “Community Support for Work” in the development, a framework that encourages peer-to-peer networking and information sharing throughout job search, attainment, and career advancement;
  • Conducting on-going research (survey collection, focus groups) to ensure that Jobs-Plus addresses community needs and residents’ expectations;
  • Planning and executing (in collaboration with other team members) monthly employment related special events such as job fairs, conferences, evening workshops, lobby sessions, and town hall meetings; and
  • Performing additional duties as assigned by program and UU leadership.

This position is for a highly energetic, outgoing “people” person who can engage people of different backgrounds and readiness levels in the Jobs-Plus program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.
  • Community organizing and outreach experience required. Experience working with residents in public housing a plus.
  • Familiarity with the Jobs-Plus model a plus.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-starter, and motivated.
  • Demonstrated positive, collaborative approach to work, including a commitment to high impact customer service and problem solving.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Outlook, Excel, Google Apps, and social media tools (e.g Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, WordPress).
  • Experience in learning and mastering new software applications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to multi-task, work well as part of a team, and maintain positive relationships with staff, Urban Upbound leadership and other key stakeholders.
  • Sense of humor and passion for social justice a must.
  • Bilingual Spanish and English strongly preferred.
  • Must be able to work some evenings and Saturdays.

Recruitment Account Manager, Workforce Development (Long Island City)

The Recruitment Account Manager oversees a portfolio of employment strategies leading to the attainment of job placement, retention and career advancement. The Recruitment Account Manager will liaise with employers to identify open employment opportunities, coordinate the job screening, matching, and on boarding processes. They will focus on building employer relationships in target sectors using strategic research and analysis of labor market data and trends. The Recruitment Account Manager will also be expected to source, screen, and match jobseekers with open job orders from candidate pipeline that they have developed.

Responsibilities

● Creating and developing opportunities for job seekers within designated geographic locations i.e Long Island City, Astoria, Sunnyside, Woodside and Far Rockaway
● Collaborating with the other Team Members including Employment Coordinators to develop and oversee the execution of innovative business development strategies within targeted sectors such as Construction, Food Services and Accommodations that is based on labor market data, job seeker needs, local economic development projects, transportation access and available training;
● Building on existing and establishing new partnerships with businesses, creating a portfolio of sustainable job opportunities;
● Planning on-site recruitment events for employers and job seekers, and organizing annual job fairs;
● Attending human resources and business networking events to meet business contacts and identify new job opportunities;
● Ensuring the integrity of data and all job placements are accurately, factually and correctly reported, documented and entered into various databases;
● Analyzing data to inform and make recommendations to leadership on programmatic decisions; and
● Participate in various capacity building activites and trainings developed by various funding sources.

Qualifications

● Bachelor’s Degree in business, Human Resources, Marketing, Communications, or related field required
● Minimum of two years’ experience in sales, marketing, or related fields
● Sales-oriented, with strong ability to network, cultivate and maintain employer partnerships
● Strong project management skills, including managing competing priorities and meeting deadlines

Career Counselor, Workforce Development (Long Island City)

The Career Counselor is responsible for providing career development services to individuals visiting the center for placement assistance. The Career Counselor will facilitate job readiness workshops and maintain a case load from assessment to placement to retention. The Career Counselor will also provide extended case management services including income support and support service referrals (both internal and external) as needed.

Responsibilities

● Conducting 1-on-1 coaching sessions with individuals to identify employment opportunities throughout the Workforce1 system by sourcing through the Worksource system database;
● Delivering job readiness preparation workshops as needed, including but not limited to creating resumes, interviewing prep, and independent job search techniques;
● Researching and developing industry knowledge in key occupations in order to ensure effective matching of candidates to available job orders;
● Identifying individuals’ strengths and weakenesses and connect them with the resources necessary (i.e ESL classes, HSE prep and occupational skills training, wraparound supports) to ensure success;
● Following up with individuals regarding job interviews and employment status;
● Ensuring the integrity of data is recorded accurately, factually and correctly reported, documented and entered into various databases in real time;
● Serving as Community Partner Liaison by identifying new Community Partners and maintaining relationships with existing Community Partners;

Retention Specialist, Workforce Development (Long Island City)

The Retention Specialist is responsible for providing regular post-placement support to employed individuals for maximum job retention results. The Retention Specialist will also provide individuals with job search support to include assistance with online job applications, updating resumes and cover letters and providing technical support to clients during computer lab hours.

Responsibilities

● Maintaining a strong supportive relationship with employed participants through consistent communication via phone, text, email, mail, social media, and in-person visits to participating jobs, and/or other designated meeting places;
● Developing a comprehensive retention strategy with the Career Counselor to ensure employed participants promptly submit 90-day, 180-day, 270-day and 360-day employment verification documents and access corresponding incentives;
● Build positive working relationships with employers to foster an ongoing business relationship;
● Explaining to employers about Urban Upbound’s services to support employees in addressing barriers to staying employed;
● Assisting clients with completing job applications, online job search, navigating various job search engines anf postings;
● Providing 1-on-1 assistance to job seekers with creating a professional email, updating resume/cover letters and applying for specific job leads;
● Enforcing policies and procedures and troubleshooting any technical issues related to computer, email, printing, or accessing the internet; and
● Particiapting in various capacity building activities and trainings developed by various funding sources.

Qualifications

● Associate’s Degree preferred; High School Diploma required
● Excellent customer service skills
● Excellent communication, interpersonal, and administrative skills
● Ability to coach a diverse group of adult learners in a confident and engaging manner over a sustained period of time

Graphic Design Intern

We are seeking an enthusiastic, creative and driven marketing & graphic design student intern to join our growing team. The intern will report directly to the Communications Coordinator and assistant to the CEO and also work closely with a project team that includes other Urban Upbound staff members and volunteers.

Hours: 15 hours per week. Typically 2 to 3 days a week.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop high-quality, visually attractive, clear engaging graphic communications for an array of documents and publications suitable for print and digital channels.
  • Ability to design web ads, infographics, signs, brochures, flyers, and other promotional materials.
  • Create & design e-newsletter, collaborating on new website pages, and email marketing campaigns
  • Ability to closely adhere to organization brand guidelines and design/font standards
  • Maintain and grow social media presence (Facebook, Twitter, Linked-in, Instagram, Pinterest)
  • Work closely with a project team to translate their messaging concepts into marketing materials.

Qualifications:

Development Intern

We currently have an exciting opportunity for an intern to work directly with the Vice President of Development and Development Manager on creating and implementing an individual donor initiative. This internship will be an excellent opportunity for an individual interested in a career in development to work on a new initiative at a growing and entrepreneurial non-profit organization.  Duties will include: prospect research, donor outreach and relationship management, maintaining individual donor system and files, creating materials for individual donors, scheduling individual donor meetings for the Urban Upbound President, and other general administrative duties associated with this initiative.

College Access Intern

Our College Access Program is looking for interns to work with our 11th and 12th grade students in the following roles:

Kaplan SAT Prep Course (Saturdays 10am-12pm) – October 19th- April 26th

  • Involves small group tutoring with 11th grade students around areas of improvement for the SAT to gear them up for the May SAT exam. Training will be offered through New York Cares.

College Application Labs (Saturdays 1-3pm) – November 9th & November 23rd

  • Individualized work with our seniors as college application deadlines approach and they need additional support. Training will be offered.

Financial Aid Labs (Wednesdays 6-9pm and/or Saturdays 12:30-3:30pm) –January 8th, 11th, 15th, 22nd, 25th, Feb. 1st )

  • Geared toward helping students fill out their FAFSA to ensure all of our students have the best chance of getting their maximum financial needs met for college.
